Saint Therese of the Child Jesus
Saint Thérèse of Lisieux , or Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, is more popularly known as "The Little Flower of Jesus.” She was born 2 January, 1873 and died 30 September, 1897. Therese was canonized 17 April, 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Saint John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church in 1997. A French Carmelite, her spirituality will tug at your heart until you become deeply drawn to this beautiful child. Since she was just twenty-four years old when she died, her life story was neither long nor complicated. It didn't have to be. The depth of her devotion was such that more years on earth would have neither added to her spirituality nor brought her closer to Jesus. Viewing our calling in life as simple, she wrote, "What matters in life is not great deeds, but great love.” Saint Therese saw herself as giving glory to God just by being one of the little flowers in His great garden. This parallel brought her the title, “Little Flower of the Child Jesus.”
